Odds are that if you have attended a wedding or any event that included dancing you would have either partaken or witnessed line dancing and the fun associated with it. It is a great way to get people on the dance floor. A line dance is any kind of dance where a large group of people stands in a line or lines of rows, mostly facing the same direction, and performs a repeated sequence of steps at exactly the same time. The list of dances is extensive but you can start by learning the most popular ones. Once you join in you can quickly pick up the variations and before you know it, you will be dancing like a pro.
Where to start?
The three most popular line dancing routines are the Boot Scootin’ Boogie, which is the most popular of all routines - It’s as traditional to American country dancing as “Kaptein span die seile” is at a “Langarm” dance. The second is the Electric Slide which became famous in the 80’s when Marcia Griffiths released a song called Electric Slide even though the dance itself was choreographed in 1976. The third one is the Cha-Cha slide where the lyrics of the song describes the steps you have to perform. Once you’ve learned the basic steps of these songs, you will find it much easier to pick up new variations and combinations on the dance floor. Other dances include songs like Cotton-Eyed Joe, the Chicken Dance, Hokey Pokey and the Cupid Shuffle.
Add your touch
Line dancing is one of the easiest things to learn. The repetitive nature makes it fun and easy to follow. While the routines are pretty simple, there is a lot of room for you to add your own little twist or quirk. You will often see people add a little something of their own to the steps, be it a clap, an extra hitch or a twirl. You are welcome to do this, if people like it, they will often do the same.
